Multiple Modernities - Multiple Gender Culture


Abstracts (selection from 31th August)

This international conference focuses on the analysis of plural gender orders and how they change over time in the context of transnational and global diversity of social dynamics of change. In order to do this, the analytical category gender is systematically applied to Shmuel Eisenstadt's multiple modernities paradigm. In addition to to empirical analyses using this concept in a variety of contexts, this also includes its expansion and further development using transnational, transcultural, and postcolonial perspectives. The central questions are: how can we compare different social configurations of gender and society globally? What theoretical impulses might facilitate these observations? What is 'different' about ‘other’ gender cultures, and what do plural gender orders have in common? The title of the conference reflects these considerations and questions: "Multiple Modernities - Multiple Gender Relations: multifaceted gender orders in the horizon of global processes of change
